Father Christmas, aka Babbo Natale, came to us as a transfer in December of 2023 after spending two years at another facility. His rescuer did everything she could for him, but Babbo is one of those quiet souls who tends to fade into the background when surrounded by a busy clowder of cats. The more outgoing personalities often claim the spotlight, while cats like Babbo wait patiently on the sidelines—watching, observing, and surviving.

We believe Babbo was born in late 2017, and when he first arrived, he needed time—about six weeks or so—to find his footing and begin to feel safe in a new environment. Even now, Babbo will likely always be somewhat guarded and semi-feral. He prefers calm, predictable surroundings and is most comfortable during the quiet parts of the day, when the shelter is nearly empty and the world feels less overwhelming.

Babbo operates entirely on his own terms. If you respect his space and allow him to initiate contact—often with a gentle headbutt—he will reward you by allowing chin scratches and pets behind his ears. He sets the pace, and he’s very clear about when he’s had enough. Recently, though, we’ve seen beautiful changes: softer eyes, fewer “tough guy” postures, and a growing, tentative trust that feels hard-earned and incredibly special.

Because of his sensitivities, Babbo Natale is not a candidate for a home with small children. He would thrive in a quiet, low-activity household with patient, cat-savvy humans who understand that trust takes time. He may do best going home with a calm feline companion or living with one other mellow cat. Despite being FIV-positive, Babbo has shown no aggression toward his feline roommates and coexists peacefully.

Babbo can be unpredictable at times, and anyone interested in him must be prepared to meet him where he is—without expectations or pressure. He is trying. Every day, he is learning that humans can be kind, consistent, and safe. For the right person, Babbo Natale offers something rare and meaningful: the privilege of earning the trust of a cat who doesn’t give his heart easily, but who is quietly opening it, one step at a time.
