Our featured cat for The River's Purrfect Friday: Duke

Here's what Dr. Jen had to say about Duke:

Oh boy- what to say about dashing Duke? See we have had him with us since June of 2006, as he is kind of a quirky cat with excessive grooming tendencies and skin allergies. Oh, we have found him several foster homes to spend time in over the years, thinking anew environment would curb his habits of licking himself bald in spots and giving himself sores, but to no avail. We have also tried him on multiple food allergy trials (hypoallergenic diets) to see if that would curb is itching and licking, but again, we have had no success.
So suffice it to say that this 13 pounder, born in December of 2004, is a bit neurotic, but we love him just the same. You couldn't ask for a more affectionate, social, outgoing, friendly fella...we just wish he would leave himself alone! I liken his habit to a kid biting his nails, sort of an ingrained habit that serves no purpose, but either relieves stress or had become such a part of his daily life that he simply forgets what he is doing until he has an oozing, red sore for us to deal with. The nice thing is that periodic steroid injections helps curb his itching and then he licks less, so he is manageable at least:)
We would like to find Duke a home with another cat or two, as he would be bored to death without a furry companion to rough and tumble with. And I am offering my veterinary services at a discount to anyone local who wants to take this big boy on; the pro's will far outweigh the con's for sure!
