Our featured cat for The River's Purrfect Friday: Basil
Here's what Dr. Jen had to say about Basil:
Early on in 2010, veterinary student Kyle Fuller befriended a sweet but shy stray that had been hanging around her apartment. He didn't really seem that interested in coming on in, so Kyle looked after him and made sure he was cared for, but then one day in June, she noticed he had a nasty abscess on his face. When she took him in to be treated, she had him tested for Feleuk and FIV, and sadly, he came back a very strong positive for FIV. Unable to take on another expense, she contacted Reuben's Room where she used to volunteer, and they steered her in our direction.
So, on June 28th, 2010, Kyle brought very shell-shocked Basil to us (born in the summer of 2007 I guesstimate). Sweet but yet unsure of himself in new surroundings, it took Basil many days at Big Sid's before he would come out of hiding; we usually found him curled up in a cubby or tucked behind or under a bed on one of the shelves.
However, we find with more coaxing and comforting, he is becoming more stable in his environment. He enjoys being pampered by the volunteers when they seek him out and feed him his own dish of canned food, gently talking to him and reassuring him while he eats. And he seems to get along with the other 114 cats at Big Sid's (strength in numbers thing I guess:) Basil has very distinct, striking markings and when his pupils aren't dilated to full size, he is oh-so handsome:) No worries: with the TLC showered on him daily, he will come out of his shell in no time!
Update long overdue! Basil has not only come out of his shell, but he has kicked it to the curb and left it behind in the dust! He is an amazing little cat who is uber-friendly and is a fan favorite here at the sanctuary! He loves everyone and is always out and about, making the rounds, seeing what is going on, chillin with the other 120 residents: we are pleased as punch he is a Big Sid's kid!
